6 ways we LOVE around the House

by | Feb 11, 2020 | Family, First Step, Partners, Service, Volunteer

In honor of February being a love-filled month, we are reflecting on all things LOVE. Love builds community, grows peace, and cultivates goodwill. Love opens our hearts to people and experiences we might not otherwise encounter or consider.

Love is Here

At The Magdalen House, we hope that you always feel loved, regardless of who you are or what brought you here.

  1. Open-Door Policy
    • Our doors are open seven days a week, 365 days a year for any alcoholic woman in need. From the hours of 9:00 am to 9:00 pm we welcome sober women to volunteer, sponsor, attend meetings/workshops and join in fellowship. You can literally just show up – and we mean it! We LOVE it when you do!
  2. A “Common Bond”
    • Our staff and meeting chairs are upfront and open in their struggles with alcoholism because we want you to know that you are not alone. The mental and physical illness we are affected by, and most importantly – the solution – is our common bond. Our socio-economic standing, race, or age doesn’t matter. We are in this together.
  3. Family Visitation
    • We allow family members and loved ones to visit our Social Detox clients seven days a week during their two-week stay. We understand that a lot of our clients are mothers, and we want them to be able to see their children in a safe and comfortable setting.
      • Sunday 1:00 pm – 6:50 pm
      • Monday – Saturday 4:00 pm – 6:50 pm*
*visitation ends at 6:30 pm on Wednesday for Family Support Group meeting, which visitors are welcome to attend
  4. We Cook Together
    • Our clients (and, often, our volunteers) cook a warm dinner together every afternoon to enjoy together at a family-style table. Cooking for others brings not only nourishment but connection. It allows our clients to be helpful and contribute to each other’s wellbeing. Did you know, you can now volunteer to cook dinner at the house? Visit our Volunteer page to apply and sign up.
  5. Service Work/Volunteerism
    • We believe in the mutual benefit of service work and volunteerism; thus, we facilitate a community where one alcoholic woman can help another alcoholic woman in various ways. Working at the front desk, organizing our clothing closet, or buying groceries from our House Needs list. Research shows that helping others strengthens a woman’s recovery, and we at Maggie’s have personally experienced this firsthand.
  6. Reciprocal Partnerships
    • We share the love with other local nonprofits as well! We want our services to help as many people as possible, so we work with other agencies in the area to stay educated, to empower and assist each other with services through our Community Outreach Program.

We will end this blog with a few beautiful words from the Dalai Lama, “Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.”
