Our Mission

The mission of The Magdalen House is to help women achieve sobriety and sustain recovery from alcoholism at no cost and based on 12-Step spiritual principles.

Our Vision

The vision of The Magdalen House is to build a thriving community of recovered women and their families — one woman at a time.

About Us

The Magdalen House (Maggie’s) is not a treatment center, though we provide a form of treatment for alcoholic women. We are a supportive educational environment rather than a clinical or medical program. Because we serve people who already know they have “the problem”, we don’t directly provide assessment or clinical counseling services. We do, however, provide an intensive orientation to the solution of recovery embodied in the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.

The Magdalen House is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is wholly privately funded – accepting no government monies.

History

Inspired by “A Way Out Women’s Center” in Houston, in 1987, a group of four recovered alcoholic women saw the urgent need for a Dallas-based safe and welcoming place for women to detox from alcohol free-of-cost. Our first home located on Lover’s Lane was opened one week after it was leased thanks to generous donations from members of the local A.A. community and served 110 women in its’ first year. We not only provided our clients with “lots of honey and orange juice, food, and lots of tender, loving care,” but we also introduced them to other sober women and the recovery program. Our method was working and the community was enthused to help us keep our doors open.
