Ida Mae Harper: A Life Remembered, A Legacy Continued

by The Magdalen House

The Community Room at The Magdalen House is dedicated to Ida Mae Harper, a woman whose life story resonates with many who have faced the struggles of alcoholism. In 2017, during a pivotal meeting between The David M. Crowley Foundation and The Magdalen House, Sandra Lee Hallmark shared her mother’s journey with alcoholism, intertwining Ida Mae’s legacy with the experiences of countless women. This connection inspired the foundation to support the Legacy of Hope Capital Campaign.

Ida Mae Harper was born in 1903 and married R.A. Harper in 1923, raising four daughters: Elsie, Peggy, Rosemary, and Sandra. Known for her love of cooking, Ida Mae was a nurturing figure in her community, always ready to help those in need. Her home was a gathering place filled with warmth and fellowship.

However, Ida Mae’s life was marred by the effects of alcoholism, beginning with her father’s struggles. After marrying R.A., her father-in-law’s homemade distillery became a part of their lives, leading to Ida Mae’s own battle with alcohol. Her children remember her desire to escape reality, which ultimately took a toll on her health. Following a heart attack shortly after Sandra’s birth, Ida Mae made the painful choice to let her mother-in-law raise her youngest child. She continued to fight alcoholism until her passing in 1965 at the age of 62, when Sandra was only 22 years old.

Ida Mae’s daughters hold a mix of fond memories and regret for their mother’s struggles. They remember her as a loving mother whose smile brought warmth, despite her battles with addiction. Sandra, raised by her grandmother, Delia Harper, came to understand her mother more deeply in adulthood and feels Ida Mae’s spirit in her life.

Ida Mae’s legacy endures through her daughters and grandchildren. Although she lost her fight with alcoholism, her story inspires others. Sandra and her family, now working with The David M. Crowley Foundation, continue Ida Mae’s legacy by supporting causes that uplift those in need.

In the Community Room at The Magdalen House, women find healing and support, inspired by Ida Mae’s generous spirit. This space embodies the love and warmth she shared, honoring her extraordinary life and the journey of every woman who enters.
