Please join us in celebrating Egan Carroll, Community Coordinator. We are so excited to have her on the team!

1. What do you do at The Magdalen House, and what does a “typical” day look like for you?

I am honored to be the newest Community Coordinator on the team! A typical day here entails engaging with the community and our First Step clients. I get the opportunity to help coordinate meeting chairs and volunteers for the program. I used to volunteer at The Magdalen House before working here, so it has been an amazing learning experience to see all the work that goes into enabling the community to be of service!

2. What is your favorite line in the Big Book and why?

“Our real purpose is to fit ourselves to be of maximum service to God and the people about us.” – Page 77

This line gave me the ‘aha’ moment in how to start turning things over and stop trying to run the show. Feeling a lack of purpose was a void in my heart that I had felt for so long until I came to The Magdalen House and learned what it meant to be uniquely qualified to help another struggling alcoholic woman.

3. What’s something you’ve witnessed at The Magdalen House that inspires or moves you?

I am inspired constantly at The Magdalen House. My favorite thing that makes my heart sing, though, is watching the transformation of the ladies from their first 24 hours to who they become after they have a spiritual experience. I have watched women come into First Step filled with fear and apprehension. Many of us were uncertain about the journey we were about to embark on, but it had to be better than what we were leaving behind. Watching these same once-fear-ridden women transform into beautiful beams of light and hope, continuing to return to the house to help the next struggling woman, is one of— if not the—most meaningful things I have ever witnessed.

4. How has working at The Magdalen House impacted your life?

Working at The Magdalen House is one of the single greatest gifts of my life. When I was in the house, the staff members were steady pillars of women in recovery, demonstrating grace and dignity, and signifying hope and happiness. I am humbled to be on staff now and give back some of the love and hope that were shared with me when I needed it the most. Being at a place where miracles occur daily and God lives permanently is a blessing I hope to never take for granted.

5. What are some of your hobbies or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

I am incredibly passionate about coaching pre-professional ballet dancers. I have been coaching for the majority of the years since I retired from dancing professionally, and being able to share my passion and education with the youth fills my heart with joy. I also really enjoy baking, particularly Irish Apple Cake (which is one of the only Irish desserts baked without any form of alcohol-fun fact). I am also very, very close with my gigantic Irish Catholic family, so although I am geographically very far from them right now (they are all on the East Coast), I spend a lot of time keeping in touch with them via group chats and sharing bad puns with them any chance I get.

5. What is something that we may not know about you?

I graduated from college with a degree in English, focusing on creative writing, and have a secret blog.  Also, I had an extra bone in my ankle that had to be surgically removed, so now I have a scar that looks like a smiley face on my heel.

About Egan Carroll

Egan Carroll, originally from New Jersey, studied at Fordham University and graduated from Montclair State University with a degree in English. Egan spent much of her young life training and dancing professional classical ballet. Since graduating from college, Egan’s career background has consisted of marketing and advertising management, as well as team development.

After years of being in and out of AA and treatment centers that didn’t focus on the true solution, Egan found herself at The Magdalen House, and it has since changed her life. She went through First Step, Next Step, and continued to volunteer as much as possible before being offered a position as a Community Coordinator. She feels honored and privileged to have the opportunity to witness miracles every day here at The Magdalen House.
