Please join us in celebrating Christy Bass, Program Coordinator. We are so excited to have her on the team!

1. What do you do at The Magdalen House, and what does a “typical” day look like for you?

After I completed the First Step in October, I never left. I continued coming to Maggie’s every day. I loved interacting with the women and witnessing the light return to their eyes. I went from volunteering at every opportunity—because being involved here felt like such a gift—to working directly with our First Step clients. Spending my days seeing miracles happen doesn’t feel like a job, and I am so lucky that it is mine.

2. What is your favorite line in the Big Book and why?

“And acceptance is the answer to all my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing, or situation – some face of my life – unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God’s world by mistake.” – Page 417

That’s such a hard question—there are so many great lines in this book, obviously! In the past, I could never accept life, or live in the present if things didn’t fit into my “perfect” design. That’s why this quote about acceptance is so important—it shapes the way I live my life today.

3. What’s something you’ve witnessed at The Magdalen House that inspires or moves you?

I can’t imagine coming to The Magdalen House and not feeling inspired. We witness miracles every day. The most miraculous thing, I think, is seeing someone who once believed it was impossible to feel anything begin to embrace the full range of their emotions. When you hear the women laughing together and finding joy in such a difficult time, you know God is at work. And when families that seemed broken beyond repair come back together, that is nothing short of a miracle.

4. How has working at The Magdalen House impacted your life?

The Magdalen House has blessed me in ways I can’t even describe. It didn’t just keep me alive—it allowed me to truly live. I feel purpose and joy whenever I think of Maggie’s. Knowing I get to be even a small part of it is life-changing. I can’t think of a single day that goes by without growth and gratitude, thanks to the continued impact Maggie’s has on my life.

5. What are some of your hobbies or things that you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

It’s odd to say, but I don’t have a lot of hobbies—yet, as I rediscover myself, I’m learning that I enjoy so many things. I love spending time with my dogs, reading, and trying new experiences.

5. What is something that we may not know about you?

I grew up and spent most of my life in a small Alabama town called Slapout. While I love the convenience of living in a big city, I will always cherish the tranquility of a slower pace of life.

About Christy Bass

Christy Bass was born and raised in Alabama, where she developed a love for math, science, and sports—especially softball. She went on to study at the University of Alabama and Auburn University in Montgomery, preparing for a lifelong career in education. Over the years, Christy served as a teacher, counselor, and principal, dedicating herself to helping students grow and succeed.

Despite her professional accomplishments, Christy reached a point where she struggled to see the beauty in life. Coming to The Magdalen House became a true turning point. It was here that she was reminded that love and kindness still exist, and she discovered a renewed sense of purpose.

Today, Christy finds joy in spending time with people and her dogs, and she is deeply passionate about Maggie’s and the mission of helping others achieve sobriety and sustain recovery. What once felt like her greatest struggles have become her greatest testimony—allowing her to walk alongside others in their own journeys.

Christy shares that while she is proud of her recovery, it was only through God’s grace that healing became possible. She strives to live each day with gratitude, focusing on the beauty in life and the fulfillment that comes from simply doing the next right thing.
