Janie’s Place is a sober living partner of The Magdalen House for women in recovery in Carrollton, Texas. Jennifer DeLeon, Founder and Program Director of Janie’s Place named it after her grandmother, an exceptionally welcoming woman that inspired the vision for this unique sober living.
As someone in recovery and who has been in sober living, DeLeon was inspired by the community and network of women that supported her early on in her recovery. She envisioned a welcoming, empowering, and encouraging environment.

“I am currently a Master’s Level Student in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and under LPC supervision. What makes Janie’s Place especially unique is that the women have me at their disposal to provide counselling and case/crisis managements for the women at any time.”
The goal at Janie’s Place is to help women get self-sufficient and independent along their recovery journey. With the help of community partners, they help women with job skills and job placement. Additionally, women at Janie’s Place are required to attend four meetings a week, including a group meeting. House meetings take place on Sunday nights each week where the women check in on each other, talk about community issues, how many meetings they’ve been to that week, and share sponsor contacts.

“Relapses don’t have to be a part of recovery, but it can be a part of recovery. When a woman comes to me after a relapse, I don’t want to just kick them out or turn them away as this is ineffective and unhelpful. Instead, I will call their treatment center and try to help them get back in and do a relapse track. Sometimes, it takes another go around to get this as it’s not easy, but these partnerships and relationships are the foundation and lets the women know that there is a community for you to help and support you.”

Through The Magdalen House partnership with Janie’s Place, Jennifer believes that maintaining the connection with one’s place of treatment, including staying close to Maggie’s following our First Step program, is a very important step in the recovery progress going from in-patient to a sober living home.

“I have ladies come from Maggie’s and if they are in IOP or PHP, it is mandatory that they attend Maggie’s meetings as it’s a part of the Place’s requirements. I check in on the ladies without asking personal questions that are discussed but will make sure that they are fulfilling their requirements and keeping their commitments.”
At Janie’s Place, women also immerse themselves into their recovery journey through required volunteer opportunities. Jennifer helps each woman sign up for a volunteer opportunity at least once a month that they can participate in as a group.
As Janie’s Place continues to grow, our partnership will help more women across Dallas-Fort Worth. Jennifer looks forward to using her personal recovery and resources to help more alcoholic women.
