What is Alcoholism?
Alcoholism is a chronic, relapsing mental illness characterized by compulsive alcohol use, loss of control over alcohol intake, and a negative emotional state when not using.
Put simply, alcoholism is a disease of the Mind and Body.
Mind
Alcoholism is a mental health disorder. If you have made multiple attempts to quit drinking but cannot stop despite the desire to or the severity of consequences, you may be suffering from this mental illness.
The question is not about consequences or circumstances. The question is can you quit entirely when you honestly want to?
Body
The body of an alcoholic reacts very different when compared to normal drinkers. If you are unable to stop once you start and experience a loss of control over the amount you drink, you may be experiencing this abnormal physical reaction.
The question is not how often or how much you drink. The question is can you stop once you start?
