Please join us in welcoming Carly Sorenson to The Magdalen House team! Carly found her passion for serving women in recovery through her own recovery and former job at Nexus. We are so grateful to have her join our team as a Program Coordinator!
1. What led you to want to work at The Magdalen House?
I went through the house in August of 2019. I couldn’t stop drinking and felt like nothing would ever work. I was completely hopeless. I came in willing to go to any length to get sober. Here, I learned about my disease, the 12 steps, and the spiritual principles to live by. I have been sober ever since. This place saved my life.
For Staff members in recovery, we like to ask a few additional questions:
How did The Magdalen House become part of your life?
I was in the midst of a relapse and finally had the “a-ha moment” I had been yearning for, a true step one experience. I called my sponsor, and she told me to call Maggie’s. I was told to come the next morning, so I packed a bag and showed up on the doorstep when the doors opened the following day.
What has been the biggest gift to you in your recovery?
Peace. Waking up with a clear mind, appreciating the beauty of the day. Rectifying my relationships with my family and friends. Gaining my self-respect and confidence back. My relationship with my Higher Power.
What would you tell the woman who is newly sober, or still trying to get sober?
You are not alone. You are not a bad person. You are loved. It takes work and is not always easy, but it is worth it. Like the ninth step promises say- you will be amazed.
What is your life like today?
Better than it’s ever been. I am so grateful for this new outlook on life and way to live. The community and fellowship that I’ve been gifted, the service I can provide to others, and the peace of mind I get to experience every day are priceless.
2. As a new team member, what are you most excited about?
Moving to Gaston!! I still can’t believe I get to be part of this monumental time in Maggie’s history.
3. What’s something we should know about you?
I love baking, and I’m a HUGE football fan. Go Packers!
About Carly Sorenson
Carly Sorenson began her work in nonprofit when she became a Recovery Advocate at Nexus Recover Center shortly after completing The Magdalen House Social Detox program.
Carly arrived at The Magdalen House in August of 2019, scared and hopeless. During her stay, she learned that there were other women like her, and for the first time, became educated on why she drank differently than others. Through the 12 Steps and spiritual principles, Carly was able to begin a life of sobriety. She stayed close to Maggie’s fellowship through volunteering and attending meetings at The Magdalen House.
Through her recovery and job at Nexus, she found her passion for serving women in recovery. She is so honored to join The Magdalen House team, working alongside the women who motivate and inspire her to carry the message to other alcoholic women.
Carly lives in Dallas with her 18-year-old cat, Toby. She enjoys true-crime shows and loves being an aunt to her niece and nephew, Kinsley and Slater.
