Rachele made her way to The Magdalen House for the first time in March of 2012. She would return a few more times before her last visit in April of 2016. This time we knew that something was different. This time she wanted recovery. She wasn’t doing it for her family or in response to consequences; it was her honest desire to get help that made the difference.

This time when Rachele left the house she immediately became involved. She came to Maggie’s frequently to sponsor women and volunteer. And we’re pretty sure she was in shock (if you know Rachele, you can probably guess the face she was making) when we asked her to volunteer overnight – an opportunity that she always took as a privilege and an honor.

It wasn’t long before we asked Rachele to be on staff, where she is now known as the “momma bear” of our Social Detox Program and oversees our Overnight Volunteers. We love that clients and volunteers feel her love – and hear her honest truth – in the way that she does so well.

What has been the biggest gift to you in your recovery?

Gosh, this one is hard because there are so many. This one is kind of selfish, but I am going to say relationships and love. First, my relationship with God that has produced peace. Relationships that I have with my family. The women who I am honored to call friends and sisters in the program. And the relationships that are to come. I have never known real love before, and I will continue to fight to keep it.

What would you tell the woman who is newly sober, or still trying to get sober?

In the Big Book, there are promises that, at first, I did not believe that I could attain. And to tell you the truth, I could not. I tried for years on my own power and honestly thought that I was a bad mom, wife, daughter, and all-around bad person.

Then, through my relationship with God and working the 12 Steps outlined in the Big Book, I found a path to peace and a design for living that really works. I found that I was not bad, even though I did do some pretty bad things while “out there,” but that I was sick and needed to get well – not “good.”

Forgive yourself, gain knowledge about this disease, take direction, and give yourself grace. You are worthy of love, a healthy-happy life, and freedom. The promises will come true if you work for them. You alone are responsible for your recovery. No one can do it for you, but we will do it with you if you take the first step. Fight for you, because you are worth it!!

What is your life like today?

I have an amazing bond with my husband and children today. I am so grateful that we stuck it out through the hard times. My kids are thriving, and my man and I are closer than we have ever been. Through the principle of attraction rather than promotion, my sister saw how it worked for me and is now free from addiction, and I get to help her raise her baby. Thanks to God, Maggie’s, and the 12 Steps – my home is a joy for the first time, and it is a safe place to land.

I get to work with women who struggle from alcoholism, and it is like the best drug ever. Working at Maggie’s is my dream job – I am honored to be in my position here. Seeing other women go from hopeless to free is what I live for.

I can truly breathe today.

Her passion is to love the broken and to help bring people to freedom. Rachele is a Maggie’s alumna and gives freely of her time and love back to the house and the women in it. She volunteers, chairs meetings, sponsors women and now works for The Magdalen House as a Program Coordinator.
