“I have total freedom from alcohol. I don’t think about drinking, and I don’t think about not drinking. It’s the craziest thing!”

– Laura Wilson, Volunteer in recovery since September 23, 2019

Laura began volunteering at The Magdalen House at the beginning of 2020. Her journey at Maggie’s began in our Social Detox program, where she had a full-body breakdown after less than 72 hours and admitted she was an alcoholic. She knew she would die if she didn’t try to work the steps. Without anything to lose she decided she may as well try, and if it didn’t work, she would die as an alcoholic. Her sponsor told her to stay close to Maggie’s, and she did!

Laura’s meetings are every other Wednesday at 7:00 pm.

1. What is your favorite line in the Big Book, and why?

“First of all we had to quit playing God. It didn’t work.” – Page 62

The very first thing my sponsor said to me was “Quit playing God.” I was shook! My life was completely dictated by alcohol when I was in control. I was selfish, resentful, dishonest and inconsiderate. When I let go, and let God, I gain absolute freedom from alcohol – he did for me what I could not do for myself.

2. What has been the most significant gift to you in your Recovery?

The most important gift has been the relationship with my Dad and spending my 18 months with him on a family vacation. Also, my sisters in recovery, reestablishing relationships, and the ability to help others recover.

3. What would you say to women who are new to recovery?

You don’t have to fully know or be able to define your higher power in the beginning. Just follow the directions from your sponsor, and work the steps in order, and you’ll learn what it is as you grow. It’s progress, not perfection!

4. What is your life like today?

I have total freedom from alcohol. I don’t think about drinking, and I don’t think about not drinking. It’s the craziest thing! I’m not perfect with my program by any means, but the tools have allowed me to be present in all aspects of my life.

5. What are some of your hobbies or things that you enjoy in your free time?

I’ve enjoyed traveling this year, spending time with friends and family, cooking, and discovering a passion for interior decorating.
